Terrorism

Terrorism continues to be a threat throughout the UK.  The national threat level is SEVERE.  This means that a terrorist attack is highly likely.

Reducing the risk to the community from terrorist or extremist activity is a very high priority for us.

The national CONTEST strategy, followed by all UK forces, focuses on:

  • Preventing terrorism, by tackling the radicalisation of individuals
  • Pursuing terrorists and those that sponsor them
  • Protecting the public, key national services and UK interests overseas
  • Preparing for the consequences

In line with this strategy, we aim to:

  • Raise awareness of threat of terrorism and extremist activity within community
  • Develop and strengthen partnerships to promote safer communities
  • Gather intelligence
  • Detect and disrupt networks and individuals
  • Monitor travel patterns to help enhance/maintain border controls
  • Counter patterns of extremist activity through intervention and community reassurance
