Divisional snapshot

This area covers some 183 square miles and has a population of 327,000 scattered in a diverse mixture of urban, rural and isolated settlements.

Ongoing social and economic changes in North Lanarkshire have resulted in an ever-changing policing environment. Modern business ventures and increasing employment opportunities are replacing traditional heavy industries. The development of the Ravenscraig site will see massive changes for the division with the creation of the country's first new town in more than 50 years.

There are four sub divisions in North Lanarkshire:

• Bellshill – ('ND' sub division) includes Bellshill, Newarthill, Viewpark and Holytown
• Cumbernauld and Kilsyth – ('NC' sub division) includes Cumbernauld, Kilsyth, Moodiesburn, Muirhead and Chryston
• Monklands – ('NA' sub division) includes Coatbridge and Airdrie and their outlying villages
• Motherwell and Wishaw – ('NE' sub division) includes Motherwell, Wishaw, Shotts, Newmains and other outlying villages.

Chief Superintendent Graham Cairns is divisional commander and is responsible for local policing strategy.  He is based at divisional headquarters in Motherwell.

Our community policing teams

There are 20 community policing teams within North Lanarkshire, each covering one or more multi-member council wards.  The teams are co-ordinated by a central communities unit.
