Diversity Recruitment
We recognise the value of diversity within the workplace – the skills and qualities that every individual brings to our teams and projects across the Force.. Our aim is to raise awareness of employment opportunities at Strathclyde Police with members of minority communities and underrepresented groups.
The Equality Act 2010 replaces previous anti-discrimination laws with a single act which strengthens the protection afforded in some situations and creates nine protected characteristics, which cannot be used as a reason to treat people unfairly. Every person has one or more of the protected characteristics, so the act protects everyone against unfair treatment. The protected characteristics are:
- age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- marriage and civil partnership
- pregnancy and maternity
- race
- religion or belief
- sex
- sexual orientation
Working across all nine protected characteristics, we recruit to all our staff sections including special constable. By forming links with influential figures in local communities and groups, we aim to spread the recruitment message to every member of society.
This is normally done through planned initiatives, community events, presentations and careers fairs, as well as in partnership with external organisations such as the Uniformed Services Partnership.
Further information on the Equality Act 2010 can be found on the Home Office website.
Recruitment Awards
A measure of our success in promoting diversity across the Force was demonstrated by way of an accolade from Remploy, who awarded Strathclyde Police with the Leading the Way 2006 award for large business users around work with disabled people.
In October 2008, we were awarded the recruitment prize for the Glasgow Business Diversity Awards, hosted by Greater Glasgow Network for Supported Employment, Glasgow Works and the Glasgow Employer Coalition. The prize is awarded in recognition of the positive measures employed to promote the career opportunities to BME and other under-represented groups.
In November 2008 we attended the National Awards, held at the Scottish Union of Supported Employment conference in Fife, and scooped the National Scottish Business Diversity Award for Recruitment. The team are delighted to have their efforts in diversity recruitment recognised at local and national level.
Most recently in July 2010 we attended the JobcentrePLus Awards for 2010 where we were delighted to be awarded the winner of the Diversity in Action Award for the Large Employer Category.
Our commitment
As an organisation we're signed up to the Double Tick Standard. This means that Jobcentre Plus recognises that we have made certain commitments regarding the employment, retention, training and career development of disabled employees.
