Medical and Fitness

Before we can admit you to the Force, you must complete a physical fitness assessment and medical examination to determine whether you're medically and physically fit to undertake training and duties.

You need good eyesight to be a police officer so if you wear glasses or contact lenses - or you're uncertain about your eyesight - your optician will need to complete a visual accuracy form for you. The form should be submitted with your application. A copy of the visual accuracy form can be downloaded from the list of pdf files at the bottom of this page.

Medical Information

You'll not be medically assessed until the very end of the recruiting process. Please note that your eyesight will be re-tested at the medical stage of the process even if you have submitted a visual accuracy form.

If you do have medical concerns, visit the Police Could You website at www.policecouldyou.co.uk, for guidance or write to:

Strathclyde Police - Occupational Health and Welfare Department,
Glasgow Caledonian University,
City Campus,
70 Cowcaddens Road,
GLASGOW,
G4 0BA

For detailed information please read the medical guidance notes included in pdf form at the bottom of the page.

Initial Fitness Screening

When you pass the Standard Entrance Test, we'll ask you to undergo fitness screening. We'll check your BMI and waist measurement, and if that's appropriate, you'll then be asked to sign a declaration confirming you're fit to undertake a Multi Stage Fitness Test (Bleep Test), or a mile and a half run, in accordance with standards outlined in the new Scottish Police Service National Fitness Standard based on age and gender. Only after you've passed this stage, can you move forward to the next part of the recruiting process.

If you fail this screening, you'll have one more chance to sit it again three months later.

Final Fitness Assessment

You will have to satisfy the new Scottish Police Service National Fitness Standard which came into force on 1 September 2007. This will either be a mile and a half run or a Multi Stage Fitness Test (Bleep Test).
