Scottish Police Service National Fitness Standard
The new Scottish Police Service National Fitness Standard assesses cardiovascular fitness.
This means the ability of your heart and lungs to provide sufficient oxygen to the working muscles to sustain a rhythmical activity involving large muscle groups (e.g. running, cycling, swimming) for an extended period of time.
This standard is based on age and gender. Assessment is done via a Multi-Stage Fitness Test (Bleep Test) or a mile and a half run.

It is also hoped to introduce a strength element into the standard at some point in the future. Further details will appear here in due course.
You will require to satisfy the National Fitness Standard on at least 5 further occasions during your probation if recruited into the Force.
Preparing for the Pre-recruitment Fitness Assessment
Even if keeping fit isn't a normal part of your routine, take this chance to change that - and prepare properly for the pre-recruitment fitness assessment.
First of all, visit your doctor to make sure you're in sufficiently good health to allow you to embark on a new training programme - this will minimise your risk of injury or illness. It's also important you allow sufficient time to prepare. Training three times a week for eight weeks is a realistic timescale - and will help you get the most benefit from your training programme.
Further advice on training can be found on the Association of Chief Police Officers of Scotland website,
www.acpos.police.ukCautionary Note
While you'll undergo your medical before your final fitness assessment, it's still essential you're free from illness or injury and able to participate fully. If, for any reason, you're unable to undertake the assessment, advise the Recruiting Department immediately so we can arrange an alternative date.
