Training and Probation
Probation's the first step in your two year training programme. This is a time where training is intensive and progress is carefully monitored. We'll give you every assistance to build the skills you'll need as an officer - and when you complete the probationary period, you'll become a police constable. Training's carried out at our Force Training and Recruitment Centre (FT & RC) at Jackton, the Scottish Police College at Tulliallan, and at your division. As you gain experience, we'll identify any special aptitudes you have - and might be able to offer assignments in our specialist departments to make the most of them.
Probation's all about continuous professional development - and the first step is induction training. You'll be issued with your uniform, shown how to maintain it, advised about conditions of service, and prepared for attending the Scottish Police College.
The Scottish Police College is a unique environment - somewhere that will test you academically and physically. It'll show you what you're really made of.
But it doesn't stop there. On your return to the Force, you'll be taught local procedures and begin your on-the-job training. And you'll put all the theoretical understanding you gained at college - on legislation and police powers - into practice, initially under the guidance of a tutor constable. Officer Safety Training will also help you deal with confrontational or violent situations.
Of course, whatever stage you're at, training's an important feature of your work. Ongoing courses are run locally and at the Scottish Police College - and you'll be continually assessed and counselled, with progress monitoring throughout your training. Any specific training needs will be addressed and you'll get all the support and guidance you need, whenever you need them.
