Special Constables FAQ
Q. Do I get training?
A. Yes. If successful, you will undergo a comprehensive and mandatory training programme over 12 consecutive Sundays, plus ongoing development throughout your service.
Q. What officer safety training do I get?
A. You receive the same officer safety training as a regular officer, as you carry the same equipment.
Q. Do I get paid?
A. If you work 45 x 4-hour tours of duty a year, then you qualify for a £1,500 taxable recognition award.
Q. Will my current job stop me becoming a special constable?
A. Some jobs may prohibit you from becoming a special constable. Check out the What Makes a Good Special Constable page for further details.
Q. Will I have to sit an exam?
A. Yes. The selection process now includes a mandatory requirement for all applicants to sit and pass the Standard Entrance Test.
Q. Will I have to do a fitness assessment?
A. No, this is not part of the current selection process, however this is being reviewed.
Q. Is there an eyesight standard?
A. Yes, if you wear glasses or contact lenses or have any doubts about your eyesight you can download a visual accuracy form for your optician to complete from our resources page.
Q. What age do I need to be before I can apply?
A. You need to be between 18 and 60 years of age.
Q. What kind of duties will I undertake?
A. You will have the same police powers as a regular officer and are likely to be deployed within the community.
Q. Do you have a minicom number for people with speech or hearing impairments?

Q. Will I be posted anywhere in the Strathclyde Police Force area?
A. It's normally the applicant's choice which division they want to work in, usually the division in which they live.
Q. Will I be told what hours to work?
A. It's up to each special constable to decide what hours they work, although it's recommended that you work four hours a week.
Q. Is there a minimum number of hours I would need to work?
A. Yes, there is a nationally agreed requirement of 60 hours per year.

Q. Will I still be able to apply to the specials if I have any previous convictions?
A. Yes. It will depend on the nature of the conviction. Please contact the recruiting department for further information.
Q. Do I need to have a full driving licence to apply?
A. No. At present you do not require to have a driving licence to apply to become a special constable.
