As divisional commander for Ayrshire, I am delighted to be able to say that this last year has been our most successful in ten years in terms of crime reduction and detection.
Out of every ten violent crimes committed in the area, between eight and nine are successfully detected and brought to a conclusion by our officers.
Over the last year we have also performed over 60,000 stop and searches. Our positive hit rates show that we are targeting the right people, in the right places, at the right times.
This gives us a solid platform from which to respond to the needs you have brought to our attention.
This is not to deny that crime continues to be a reality. However, we aim to minimise its impact on local residents as we respond to the needs of a diverse community spread out over 1320 square miles.
To that end, we maintain our commitment to target those involved in serious and organised crime and those who deal in illegal substances. We want to be sure that such criminals cannot operate with impunity in our communities.
We recognise that the current economic pressures may cause an increase in certain types of crime. That's why we keep an eye on emerging trends and adapt our techniques accordingly.
We continually work to develop the proficiency and effectiveness of our community policing teams and to make sure their partnerships with other agencies are strong. This enables them to respond quickly to a changing environment.
We can only achieve what we do because of your help. The level of joint venture and community engagement in Ayrshire is exemplary. I'm sure this will bring many more positive results in the year to come.
At the same time, we count on you to let us know where we could be doing better.
In the end, any success we have is your success.
